Urasoe Castle Ruins

Urasoe Castle Ruins

The ruins of Urasoe Castle. Designated as a national historic site, it was built in the 13th century and became a large-scale castle around the 14th century, and was the stronghold of the rulers of the time. It was the center of politics, culture, and diplomacy until the Ryukyu Kingdom moved its base to Shuri Castle. Located on a hill overlooking the city on one side and the west coast of the island on the other, it is one of the most valuable historical sites in Okinawa.

Urasoe Yodore

The tombs of the kings of Ryukyu in the Urasoe Castle ruins. King Eiso rests on the right side and King Sho Nei from Urasoe rests on the left side. The Urasoe Gusuku Yodore Museum has a replica of the inside of the tomb chamber, which is a must-see. The word yodore means "evening calm" in the Ryukyu language, and it is thought that the word has been used to describe the site because it has such tranquil imagery.

This park has fun attractions such as a slide, large-scale athletic equipment, and more. The park works as a recreation ground for many families and local people, especially on weekends. The ground around the athletic equipment has rubber mats so small children can play without fear of getting hurt. Gazebos and food vendors with seating areas make for a comfortable location even during the hot Okinawan summer days.

Futenma Sankei-Michi (Paved Stone Path of Touyama)

This stone-paved path was built in 1597 by King Sho Nei of the Ryukyu Kingdom in order to connect Shuri Castle and Urasoe Castle. This road is said to have been used by the kings of that era. The path is carefully paved with rocks that still give it the original look, though some stones are losing their shape, which creates quite an effect.
